Adoption Process
Adopting a greyhound is a lifelong commitment, as these dogs typically live between 12 to 14 years. It is essential to meet the specified "Adoption Requirements" to ensure the safety and health of the greyhound. If you are unable to make this long-term commitment or comply with these requirements, please reconsider your decision to adopt. Financial responsibility is also an important consideration when adopting a greyhound. The adoption fee of $225.00 is only the beginning, as there are ongoing veterinary costs associated with caring for any dog, even though greyhounds are generally a healthy breed. The adoption fee through GREYHEART includes the following services: spaying or neutering, teeth cleaning and extractions as necessary, heartworm testing, three months of heartworm medication (plus one month provided in the foster home), DHLPP vaccine, Lepto booster if needed, coronavirus vaccine, Bordetella vaccine if needed, rabies vaccine, flea and tick treatment (Frontline Top Spot), fecal testing with appropriate medication until negative results are obtained, tapeworm medication (Droncit) if needed, as well as a collar, leash, muzzle, and GREYHEART identification tag. Adopters must acknowledge and agree to the following: keeping their greyhound on a lead outside of an enclosed fenced area; ensuring that greyhounds live indoors and are not kept in outdoor kennels or dog houses; maintaining identification on the greyhound at all times; never using a tie-out chain, as greyhounds are sight hounds capable of running up to 45 mph, which could lead to serious injuries; walking their greyhound on a leash at least four times daily if no fenced yard is available; keeping all necessary vaccinations and tests up to date each year and maintaining the greyhound on heartworm prevention; returning the greyhound to the adoption agency if they are unable to keep it for any reason; certifying that all application information is accurate; allowing GREYHEART to contact their veterinarian and personal references; and signing a contractual agreement.
