About this shelter
Marshmallow Foundation in Detroit Lakes, MN
Marshmallow Animal Shelter operates as a "low kill" shelter, a principle that is deeply important to us. We hold stray animals for five business days to allow time for their owners to reclaim them. After this period, we have the option to euthanize the animal if necessary. However, our commitment is to provide a second chance for these animals, and we only consider euthanasia in exceptional circumstances. We strive to give every animal that comes to us the opportunity to find a new home. Due to our dedication to caring for these animals until they are adopted, many stay with us for extended periods. On average, we care for over 40 cats and 15 dogs, and we do not impose time limits on their stay. This commitment requires support from the community. In addition to rehoming pets, Marshmallow Animal Shelter collaborates with local and regional service dog training programs and police departments. We take pride in the fact that several of our shelter dogs have gone on to assist individuals and organizations in need. The staff and volunteers at Marshmallow Animal Shelter work tirelessly each day to care for animals that have nowhere else to go. Their work is driven by passion and a desire to make a difference. We encourage you to help us continue this vital work by considering a donation, ensuring that these animals have a safe haven until they find loving families and homes. Thank you for your support.

Adopting from Marshmallow Foundation
Adoption process
Marshmallow Animal Shelter is dedicated to ensuring that every adopted animal finds a loving home where it will receive proper care. To achieve this, our adoption application includes a series of detailed questions that are essential for our screening process. We will assess your willingness to meet the animal's needs and provide appropriate training. It is important that you demonstrate your commitment in terms of time, finances, energy, and compassion for the animal. Upon approval of your application, you will need to sign a contract that guarantees the animal will not be transferred or sold, ensures its proper care, and confirms that spay/neuter surgery will be performed if it has not already been completed.
