Adoption Process

To adopt a pet, you must be at least 21 years old. The adoption fee is $150 for dogs and $85 for cats. This fee includes vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and a microchip with a lifetime membership. If you wish to contribute more, additional donations are welcome. A securely fenced yard is required for dog adoptions. If your yard is not fenced, please provide a description of your property. Dogs must be kept indoors at all times; no exceptions are permitted. The use of chains and runners is not allowed, and dogs cannot be housed outdoors or in outdoor kennels. You are required to complete our online adoption application for either dogs or cats. A veterinary check will be conducted, which may include a review of your residence and a background check. All pets in your care must be spayed or neutered, receive monthly heartworm prevention, and be current on all vaccinations without exception. You must comply with all state laws. If you are renting, a letter from your landlord granting approval for pet ownership is required. Cats cannot be declawed. They must be kept indoors, although indoor-outdoor arrangements may be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on the individual cat and the location of the home. You must sign and adhere to our adoption contract. You agree to provide your new pet with love and care.

Animal Aid for Vermilion Area in Abbeville, LA

Animal Aid for Vermilion Area (AAVA) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) animal rescue organization founded in 1995 and based in South Louisiana. To date, AAVA has successfully rescued thousands of animals. The organization has responded to five natural disasters, including hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, AAVA played a crucial role in reuniting people with their pets and rescuing cattle from drowning and starvation. AAVA also contributed to the passage of the Pet Evacuation Bill, which ensures that service animals and pets are not abandoned during emergencies. With over 25 years of experience, AAVA is dedicated to rescuing and rehoming as many animals as possible from the local Animal Control facility, which is a high-kill shelter with no adoption program. While there are always many dogs and cats available for adoption, the organization faces significant challenges due to the lack of an adoption program at this facility.
