Adoption Process
The adoption process consists of several key steps. First, we will check your personal references, so please provide two references who are not related to you. If you do not own your home, we will contact your landlord or leasing office for verification. Additionally, we require a veterinarian reference. If you do not currently have pets, please provide the name of the veterinarian you used for any previous pets. It is mandatory that all pets in your home are spayed or neutered. Next, one of our adoption coordinators will conduct a phone interview to discuss your application and the dog you wish to adopt. Following this, a volunteer from Key to Lion's Heart Rescue will perform a home visit. Once your application is fully processed, you will be informed of your approval to adopt. You may then bring your new dog or puppy home after signing the adoption contract and paying the required donation fee. The adoption fees are as follows: for puppies up to six months old, the fee is $400, which includes age-appropriate vaccinations and a microchip. For dogs aged six months to seven years, the fee is $350, which covers routine vaccinations, spaying or neutering (unless medically unfeasible), and a microchip. Dogs over the age of seven have a fee of $250, which includes routine vaccinations, spaying or neutering (unless medically unfeasible), and a microchip.
Service Areas
We serve all counties in Maryland, with the exception of Prince George's County, where there is a ban on pit bulls. Therefore, we do not adopt out any pit bulls or pit bull mixes to that county. Our services also extend to Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Key to Lion's Heart Rescue in Derwood, MD
I am the founder and president of Key to Lion's Heart Rescue. My passion for animals drives my commitment to helping homeless dogs and educating the community. Key to Lion's Heart Rescue's mission is to save the lives of animals in shelters or those suffering from abuse and neglect, giving them a second chance at life while promoting awareness of animal welfare. We operate as a foster and volunteer-based organization, relying entirely on donations and fundraising to support our care for the dogs. Our foster program provides a loving, nurturing, and safe environment for all animals in our care, addressing their needs comprehensively. We ensure that all animals receive vaccinations, microchipping, heartworm testing, and spaying or neutering when age-appropriate. Additionally, we offer rehabilitation and training to those in need, preparing our dogs for adoption into responsible and loving homes. Through our outreach program, we strive to educate the community and youth about the importance of animal welfare, proper nutrition, and the significance of spaying and neutering. We actively engage with students by visiting schools and inviting them to participate in our community fundraisers and events. We believe that involving youth in our mission to end cruelty and reduce the overpopulation of animals in shelters is crucial, as they will be the ones to shape the future of animal welfare.
