Dogs XL Rescue in Silver Spring, MD
Dogs XL is a unique dog rescue organization dedicated to the belief that no dog or home is perfect. We are committed to helping individuals find the right dog for their lives, provided they are open to welcoming a canine companion. Our approach resembles a social networking service, designed to connect people and pets based on compatibility and compassion. As suggested by our name, Dogs XL focuses on finding homes for large dogs, typically those weighing 75 pounds or more. Large dogs are often the first to be euthanized in shelters due to the higher costs associated with their medical care and food, as well as the additional space they require in shelters and during transport to adoptive families. While owning a large dog may not suit everyone, they possess many unique and lovable qualities. At Dogs XL, we believe that the larger the dog, the more there is to love. Occasionally, we also assist smaller dogs that have larger-than-life personalities. Additionally, Dogs XL collaborates with other local rescue organizations to facilitate adoptions for families that may be more suitable for smaller dogs. Dogs XL operates as an all-volunteer, non-profit animal rescue group.

Adopting from Dogs XL Rescue
Adoption process
To initiate the adoption process, prospective adopters must complete an adoption questionnaire. An adoption coordinator will reach out within 72 hours to conduct an interview. Following this initial interview, if the adopter currently has or has recently had pets, we will contact their veterinarian to verify that the pets are up to date on vaccinations and have been spayed or neutered. When feasible, a volunteer will arrange a home visit to offer guidance on how to make the home safe for a new puppy. Alternatively, the foster family of the dog being adopted may visit the home to introduce the dog to its new environment while also conducting the home visit. Adoption fees are as follows: - Puppies 6 months and under: $350 - Adult dogs 7 months to 8 years: $300 - Senior dogs 9 years and older: $250 These fees contribute to the expenses associated with transporting animals to the Baltimore/DC area, boarding, and veterinary care, which includes vaccinations, testing for heartworm and Lyme disease, preventive treatments for fleas, ticks, and heartworm, as well as spay and neuter surgeries.
