Adoption Process

When an animal is surrendered to HPHS, we require a signed release form from the individual. Following this, we ensure that the animal is vaccinated and spayed or neutered before it becomes available for adoption. Adoption fees vary and are provided for each animal.

We provide services to the entire Modoc County in northeastern California.

High Plateau Humane Society in Alturas, CA

HPHS was established in 1987 and rescues approximately 120 dogs and 250 cats each year. As an all-volunteer organization, we operate a thrift store known as Second Chance Thrift, where we facilitate animal adoptions and sell low-cost spay and neuter certificates. Our team consists of numerous volunteers, including a board of five members. Our mission is driven by a deep passion for rescuing orphaned and homeless animals and improving their lives within our county.
