Adoption Process

The adoption process begins with the completion of an adoption application. This step ensures that the horse will be placed in a safe environment and allows us to understand your situation and the type of horse you are seeking. You will need to provide your personal contact information, details about the horse you are looking for, and references, which should include three personal references, your veterinarian, and your farrier. Please note that we will contact your references. Adoption fees vary by horse, typically ranging from $100 to $500. Once you have completed the application, please email it to [email protected] or mail it to CVHR, 389 Boydton Plank Road, Brodnax, VA 23920. Our application is straightforward and not overly complicated. Our decision will be based on your references and the suitability of the horse for your home. We aim to ensure that both you and the horse will be happy together. If you are interested in adopting a horse for training and resale at a later date, please reach out to us, as this option is available for certain horses.

Central Virginia Horse Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization located in south central Virginia, dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of horses in need. Our mission is to save, protect, and rehabilitate equines that are unwanted, abused, neglected, or abandoned. We provide these animals with necessary care and rehabilitation and strive to find them loving, compatible homes. We believe that education is essential for improving the lives of equines in the long run. Our goals include rescuing unwanted horses from auctions and feedlots, educating horse owners and the public about proper equine care, and addressing issues of neglect, abuse, and slaughter. We aim to rescue equines from harmful situations by providing education to owners and assisting in placing at-risk animals, while also taking legal action when necessary to remove equines from neglectful care. Additionally, we offer gelding services for unwanted stallions until they can be adopted. We focus on rehabilitating sick, injured, and underweight equines, restoring them to health, and we ensure humane euthanasia for those that cannot be rehabilitated. Our commitment extends to finding loving homes for all equines under our care, as well as maintaining a haybank to provide feed for horses in emergency situations. Central Virginia Horse Rescue is proud to have achieved Verified status from the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, which recognizes our adherence to the highest standards of animal care. We are also honored to have been named a Top Rated Nonprofit in both 2012 and 2013.
