Adoption Process

When an individual arrives at the adoption center or a mobile site, they begin by completing an application form. A volunteer will then conduct an interview to assess the applicant's knowledge and experience with cats, as well as inquire about any other pets they may have. The applications undergo an approval process to ensure suitable matches between cats and families based on their home environment and lifestyle. While some adult cats can be adopted individually, we generally recommend adopting kittens in pairs unless the adopter already has a playful cat or dog at home to keep the kitten company. Upon finalizing an adoption, the adopter will complete an adoption contract. King Street Cats charges a non-refundable adoption fee of $125 for one cat or kitten, and $225 for adopting two. All cats have been examined by a veterinarian and tested for FELV/FIV. Adult cats are fully updated on their vaccinations, while kittens receive vaccinations appropriate for their age. Additionally, all cats and kittens are spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

King Street Cats in Alexandria, VA

King Street Cats is the only cat-exclusive, no-kill rescue facility in Alexandria, Virginia. Operated entirely by volunteers, we rely on private donations to sustain our work. Formerly known as The Albert Foundation before 2003, King Street Cats houses an average of 30 cats. Our free-roaming environment allows visitors to interact with what we consider the "cat-friendliest cats" in the area on weekends. Our mission is to find loving homes for the cats and kittens in our care while educating and assisting the community with cat welfare. We engage with local residents by providing information on proper cat care, behavioral issues, and other cat-related topics. We are responsive to inquiries made via phone or email and assist in locating lost cats as well as guiding individuals through the adoption process. We advocate for spaying and neutering, ensuring all our cats and kittens are sterilized and fully vaccinated before adoption. Additionally, we offer post-adoption support and advice on cat care to adopters and anyone in need. Our focused work in cat welfare has equipped us with extensive knowledge about cats. We believe every cat, regardless of age or personality, deserves a permanent home, and we continue to care for our cats until they find the right match.
