Adoption Process

Adoption Requirements When a Great Pyrenees is surrendered by its previous owner, rescued from a shelter, or found as a stray, PYRescue assumes full responsibility for its medical care, nutrition, grooming, training, and eventual placement in a suitable home. All prospective adopters must complete an adoption application and sign a legally binding contract that outlines the care requirements for the Great Pyrenees. This contract also stipulates that PYRescue retains the right to reclaim the dog if it is determined that the care provided does not meet PYRescue’s standards. Under no circumstances will an intact Great Pyrenees be placed with a new guardian. PYRescue conducts regular follow-ups to ensure that its standards are upheld. Potential adopters are required to meet with PYRescue staff and the specific Great Pyrenees they wish to adopt. When possible, the dog will also be introduced to other family dogs in a neutral environment. Ultimately, the decision to adopt hinges on the willingness of the Great Pyrenees to accompany the prospective guardian. If the dog shows any hesitation or refusal, the adoption will not proceed, and alternate arrangements will be sought. Many of the rescued Great Pyrenees have previously been family pets, and whenever feasible, they are placed in homes that prioritize pet care. However, due to the increasing demand for placements, PYRescue also considers ranch or farm environments, especially those with small llama or sheep herds. This strategy has proven effective when new owners demonstrate patience and compassion as the dog adjusts to its new surroundings. Additionally, PYRescue creates and disseminates educational materials regarding the guardianship and care of the Great Pyrenees.

Great Pyrenees Rescue and Sanctuary in PEYTON, CO

PYRescue is a sanctuary dedicated to Great Pyrenees dogs awaiting adoption. Founded by John and Linda Kryder in 1994, the organization began after they adopted their first Pyrenees puppy, Nichole, in 1992. Their journey led them to become involved with the Great Pyrenees Club of America, where they participated in various activities and the rescue program. After separating from the club, they established PYRescue, which became a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in 2011. Over the years, they have rescued an average of two Pyrenees each week, successfully placing more than 2,500 dogs in loving homes. In June 2015, the Kryders retired and passed the organization to new owners, Judith Dole and Dr. Michael Heffron, who had acquired a large property a few miles from the original location in 2014. They constructed a facility tailored to the needs of these large dogs, featuring a four-acre fenced pasture for play and 150 square-foot indoor/outdoor kennels equipped with heating, cooling, and comfortable bedding. Tax-deductible donations support the care of the dogs by covering expenses such as food, utilities, transportation, and veterinary care. We encourage you to consider sponsoring a Pyrenees currently in our shelter or to make a donation to assist these wonderful animals. For more information, please contact us or use the donation options available on our homepage. The mission of PYRescue is to provide ongoing care and support for all Great Pyrenees in need due to circumstances beyond their control. We are committed to offering all necessary medical, physical, and emotional care, including spaying and neutering, to ensure that every homeless or unwanted Pyrenees finds a permanent, happy, and loving home that meets their individual needs. Our efforts extend throughout Colorado and surrounding states as necessary.
