Anchorage has more than any other Alaska city, followed by Palmer and Wasilla. Between them there are dogs and cats of every age and size in Alaska, and the right one is rarely the one you set out looking for.

    A mix of both, and the difference is worth knowing before you set out. A rescue usually places animals from a network of foster homes rather than from premises you can walk into, so you generally arrange a meeting first.
