Adoption Process

The adoption fees are $50.00 for cats and kittens, while dogs range from $150.00 to $275.00. Potential adopters are required to complete adoption applications and contracts. We will verify veterinary references, and home visits may be necessary for some animals.

The Appalachian Highlands Humane Society is dedicated to promoting spaying and neutering as an essential part of animal welfare. We rescue animals from local shelters and place them in foster care, providing necessary medical care and ensuring they are spayed or neutered before adoption. Our team monitors Craigslist daily to identify individuals offering "free" puppies, dogs, cats, and kittens, in order to encourage them to surrender these animals to us. We also strive to educate these individuals about the importance of spaying and neutering, as well as the risks associated with giving away pets for free. In addition to our foster animals, we also feature animals from the local shelter at our adoption events.
