Adoption Process

Potential adopters must begin the process by completing an adoption application. If they are interested in a specific horse, they should include the horse's name on the application. A volunteer from USERL will reach out to discuss the horse and connect the applicant with the foster home. Once the potential adopter, the foster home, and the relevant USERL Regional Director or Executive Director agree that there is a suitable match, USERL will arrange a barn check. A USERL volunteer will schedule a time to visit the applicant's barn to assess safety, cleanliness, and the condition and temperament of any other horses present. The overall process typically takes between one week and one month, depending on the availability of both the potential adopter and the volunteer for the barn check. To proceed, applicants should complete and return the USERL Preliminary Adoption Application. USERL will follow up if there are any additional questions. If the personal interview is satisfactory and there is a suitable horse available, USERL will arrange a visit to evaluate the applicant's facilities. Additionally, USERL will conduct interviews with the references listed on the application. Following the successful completion of these steps, USERL will organize a session with the prospective horse to assess compatibility. Depending on the outcome, further sessions may be requested. Regarding facility requirements, the applicant's facility must have at least a roof and three sides, be in good repair, and free of standing water. The horse must have a minimum of four hours of daily turnout in a safe and appropriate fenced area; barbed wire is not permitted. It is also requested that the adopted horse be kept with a companion horse or another compatible large herd animal. Once all requirements and preliminary adoption procedures have been fulfilled, USERL will require the following at the time of final adoption: the completion of a permanent Adoption Contract outlining the care required for the adopted horse, and full payment of the adoption fee, which is non-refundable after 30 days and determined by USERL at its discretion. USERL reserves the right to conduct unannounced follow-ups on the adopted animal and the facility. If either is found to be in unsatisfactory condition, USERL will attempt to assist the adopters in addressing the issues. If these efforts are unsuccessful, USERL retains the right to reclaim the adopted horse at any time. Additionally, the adopter may be required to provide proof of necessary veterinary and farrier care, as well as an annual health statement from their veterinarian and farrier.

The United States Equine Rescue League (USERL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the compassionate care of equines. Our mission is to save, protect, and rehabilitate equines in need. We focus on rescuing abused, neglected, or abandoned equines, providing them with necessary care and rehabilitation, and ultimately finding them compatible, loving homes. We believe that education is essential for improving the lives of equines in the long term. USERL, incorporated in North Carolina in 1997, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with Tax ID# 56-2069469. We are primarily funded through private donations and fundraising efforts, and our organization relies heavily on a dedicated team of volunteers. We maintain a foster network that includes nearly 100 homes and average over 100 equine rescues each year. Our active regions include North Carolina, Virginia, and Indiana. Our goals are to educate horse owners and the public about proper equine care, as well as the issues surrounding neglect, abuse, and slaughter. We aim to rescue equines from neglectful and abusive situations by providing education to owners, assisting in the placement of at-risk equines, and, when necessary, working within legal frameworks to remove equines from harmful environments. We also focus on rehabilitating sick, injured, and underweight equines to restore their health. For those equines that cannot be rehabilitated, we provide humane euthanasia to end their suffering. Ultimately, we strive to ensure that all equines under our care find compatible, loving homes.
