Finney County Humane Society in Garden City, KS

The new shelter was inaugurated in February 2010, following the resignation of the previous shelter manager, for whom no replacement had yet been appointed. During the transition from the old facility to the new one, volunteers from FCHS played a crucial role. While our contributions were not always fully recognized, the police department recognized our value and encouraged our involvement. The new shelter provided increased opportunities, leading to a significant rise in adoptions due to the influx of visitors to the clean facility. However, this increase was accompanied by a rise in animal intake. In April 2010, a new shelter manager was appointed, but many outdated procedures continued to hinder operations. To address the situation, numerous foster homes were established to care for animals until they could be adopted or transferred to rescues. This period was particularly challenging, with frequent changes in management and a high turnover of volunteers. Many became discouraged upon learning that animals they had worked to save were euthanized simply for being in the system for too long. As a result, volunteer numbers dwindled, and foster homes became scarce, leaving only a small group of dedicated supporters. Eventually, the police department recognized the complexities of managing a humane shelter and, in 2016, requested that the Humane Society assume operations. Previous attempts to make this transition had been unsuccessful due to financial constraints, but a generous bequest from a cat-loving individual who passed away in 2015 enabled the Humane Society to take on this responsibility. We officially began managing the shelter on January 1, 2017. Despite skepticism from some who anticipated our failure, we have since demonstrated our effectiveness, transforming the shelter into one of the most progressive facilities in the state.
