Adoption Process

To adopt a pet from CARE Pet Rescue, you must first submit an adoption application. Our adoption fees are structured as follows: For dogs and puppies: - Under 1 year: $175 - Ages 1 to 6 years: $150 - 7 years and older: $125 For cats and kittens: - Under 1 year: $55 - Ages 1 to 9 years: $45 - Senior cats: $35 Please note that we do not process applications or facilitate adoptions on a first-come-first-served basis. Instead, we prioritize finding the best match for our pets based on various factors to ensure they go to loving, permanent homes. We review your application to confirm that you are permitted to have pets in your home, to prevent our rescues from being surrendered again in the future. Once your application is approved, we will conduct a home visit to ensure that your living environment is safe for the pet and that all household members, including other pets, will get along well. Our pets are placed in foster homes rather than a shelter setting, where they are treated as part of the family and receive training and socialization. If you wish to meet one of our pets, we will coordinate a meeting with the foster family at a location that is comfortable for you. During the adoption process, you will be required to sign an adoption contract. This contract includes a commitment not to surrender or sell the pet to anyone else and requires that the pet be returned to the rescue if you can no longer care for it. Additionally, the contract outlines your responsibility to provide the pet with high-quality food, clean water, and regular veterinary care.

We serve all of Iowa, with a primary focus on Central Iowa. Our organization is based in the Des Moines metropolitan area, specifically in Polk County. However, we receive most of our rescue animals and adopters from various locations throughout the state.

CARE Pet Rescue is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to saving stray and abandoned dogs and cats from euthanasia, abuse, and neglect. Lacking a dedicated boarding facility or shelter, our rescued pets reside in local homes where they receive medical care and rehabilitation to prepare them for permanent adoption. Our mission extends beyond placing animals in loving homes; we also focus on educating pet owners about responsible pet ownership. As a non-profit organization, we primarily rescue homeless animals, especially dogs from high-kill shelters and those relinquished by owners who can no longer care for them. Through the support of dedicated volunteers, foster homes, local veterinarians, trainers, and boarding facilities, we successfully assist approximately one hundred animals each year, providing them with compassionate care and helping them find suitable, carefully screened forever homes. We also aim to be a valuable resource for our community and all pet owners, offering education on responsible pet ownership, the significance of spaying and neutering, positive behavior training, and proper nutrition. At CARE Pet Rescue, no board members or employees receive a salary; all contributions, whether administrative or hands-on with the animals, are entirely voluntary. With many shelters operating at full capacity, animal rescues are essential in every community. The ability to rescue and place deserving pets into loving foster homes, rather than in noisy kennels, is immensely rewarding. Every pet deserves the care and love we strive to provide through our rescue efforts.
