Paws New England in Warwick, RI
Paws New England operates with two primary missions. The first is to rescue abandoned, neglected, and abused dogs from high-kill shelters and desperate situations. The organization provides these dogs with necessary veterinary care and compassionate attention before transporting them to New England, where they are placed in safe and loving homes. The second mission focuses on reducing and ultimately ending the 90% euthanization rate at the Tipton County Animal Shelter in Millington, Tennessee, by promoting community education on spaying and neutering pets. Paws New England was founded eight years ago when Traci Wood, one of its co-founders, visited the Tipton County Animal Shelter in search of a friend's lost dog named Snowflake. Although Snowflake was found later that day, Traci was deeply affected by the sight of the many suffering animals at the shelter. Moved by their plight, Traci began to visit the shelter several times a week, taking photos of the dogs, posting them on Petfinder, and collaborating with various rescue groups across the country. Through her efforts, she successfully rescued and placed numerous dogs into loving homes. Later that summer, Kelly Parker from Boston noticed Traci’s postings and reached out, asking how she could assist. Their collaboration led them to Jo-Anne Hutchinson, who encountered one of Traci’s dogs during a transport while working with another rescue. After rescuing the dog, Jo-Anne took her home, which marked the beginning of Paws New England. About a year after its founding, Paws New England was introduced to Julie Adams, a dedicated rescuer in Missouri who was known for taking in abandoned and injured animals in her town where no shelter existed. Julie cared for these animals, covering all their veterinary and daily needs. She reached out to Paws New England for assistance in finding homes for some of her dogs to make space for more animals in need. Today, Paws New England has grown significantly, boasting over 75 volunteers and a robust network of foster homes and rescue partners, including local shelters, veterinarians, and trainers. Based in Barrington, Rhode Island, Paws New England has established itself as one of the most recognized rescue organizations in the region. Over the past eight years, it has successfully rescued and placed more than 7,000 dogs from Tennessee, Missouri, and various shelters across the country into loving homes, fulfilling its foundational mission of saving lives, one dog at a time.
