Adoption Process

All rabbits must live indoors in a minimum space of 4x4 feet or have free range within the home. They should be provided with high-quality pellets, unlimited hay, a daily salad, and ample attention and exercise. Adopters are also required to ensure regular veterinary care. Each rabbit is spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Additionally, the primary caregiver must be an adult. If an adopter is unable to care for their rabbit, they must return it to Ohio House Rabbit Rescue. To adopt a rabbit, interested individuals must first complete an application for the specific rabbit they wish to adopt. Following this, they will be interviewed by the Adoption Coordinators at OHRR. If both the application and interview are approved, the adopter will sign a contract acknowledging their understanding of the care expectations for the rabbit(s). This contract includes a commitment to notify Ohio House Rabbit Rescue upon the rabbit's death and acknowledges that OHRR reserves the right to reclaim the rabbit if its wellbeing is at risk or if the adoption policy is violated. OHRR will deliver all rabbits to the adopter's home to assist in setting up the rabbit's space and to provide additional guidance on rabbit-proofing. This also allows OHRR to ensure that the housing conditions are suitable. The adoption fee for a single rabbit is $40, while the fee for a bonded pair is $60.

Ohio House Rabbit Rescue, Inc. in Columbus, OH

Ohio House Rabbit Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to rescuing and adopting indoor pet rabbits. Our mission is to establish and manage a center for abandoned pet rabbits, implement a comprehensive adoption program, and offer educational resources on the proper care of rabbits as indoor companions. We envision a community where all pet rabbits are housed indoors, receive appropriate diets and habitats, and have access to regular veterinary care throughout their lives. Founded in 2009 by experienced rabbit owner Beverly May, OHRR was created in response to the alarming statistic that over 900 rabbits are surrendered annually in Central Ohio. Recognizing the need for a dedicated rescue and adoption center, Beverly initiated a network of foster homes to facilitate the rescue of rabbits and build community support. In 2013, OHRR opened the Ohio House Rabbit Adoption Center, the first facility in Ohio focused exclusively on the rescue and adoption of rabbits. That same year, we successfully placed over 70 rabbits into loving homes. In addition to our adoption program, OHRR organizes Midwest BunFest, the largest rabbit-related exposition in the Eastern United States. This event features shopping from various small animal supply vendors, a Bunny Spa offering nail trims and grooming, Bunny Glamour Shots pet photography, opportunities to connect with rabbit rescues from across the Midwest, and more than ten educational sessions led by nationally recognized veterinarians and certified rabbit educators. In 2012, we launched the Fix-a-Bun (FAB) Low-Cost Spay/Neuter program to assist families with the costs of spaying and neutering their rabbits in Ohio. This initiative has successfully supported many families in accessing affordable surgical care for their pets. Additionally, OHRR participates in adoption events at local pet supply stores and hosts quarterly community fundraisers. We also provide email and telephone support to rabbit owners throughout Ohio and beyond.
