Adoption Process

We maintain a local email list and community board where we share information about all available pets for adoption. Our organization collaborates with veterinarians and local shelters to find homes for animals. We ensure that our pets do not enter the shelter system unless our foster homes are at capacity.

The service areas include the Embudo Valley, Dixon, Cononcito, Apodaca, Rinconada, Embudo, Espanola, Taos, Ojo Sarco, Velarde, Alcalde, and the surrounding regions.

DPS was founded over 30 years ago by Jeannie Cornelius, who once cared for 49 dogs. I became involved through a mutual friend and assumed the role of President when we relocated here two years ago. Both Jeannie and I have always been passionate about animals and feel a deep connection to them. Prior to our move, I volunteered with the Austin Humane Society as a dog volunteer, despite being allergic to cats, and I currently have three cats.
