Adoption Process
Adoption Procedure To begin the adoption process for a dog from Echo Dogs White Shepherd Rescue, you must first complete an application. This application can be accessed from the Adoption drop-down menu on our website or directly through the Echo Dogs Application Form. Once submitted, your application will be sent to our processing team, who will conduct reference checks. Please note that we will contact your references directly. We will reach out to the references you have listed on your application. The information they provide will remain confidential, as we believe that this encourages honest feedback. We recommend that you inform your references about our potential contact, as some, particularly veterinarians, may hesitate to speak with us without your permission. Approval of your application is contingent upon receiving satisfactory responses from both veterinary and personal references. After successfully completing the reference checks, we will arrange a home visit. A volunteer from Echo Dogs or a representative from a partner rescue group will reach out to you to schedule this visit. We will inform you of who will conduct the visit and work with you to find a convenient time. Please be assured that home visits are not intimidating. This part of the process can feel stressful, but it is designed to achieve three key objectives: to confirm the accuracy of the information in your application, to assess whether your home can provide a safe and loving environment for a dog, and to help identify a dog that matches your family’s needs and lifestyle. Once your application is approved following the reference checks and home visit, we will assist you in finding a suitable dog. We recognize that not every dog fits every home, and our goal is to ensure that you adopt a dog that will bring joy to your life and be cherished in return. At this stage, our Adoption Coordinator will become involved. She will review your application and the home visit report, then share your information with the foster home that has a dog that may be a good fit for you. The foster home will reach out to provide details about the dog, and you are encouraged to ask questions to ensure that this dog is the right match for you. If you feel that the dog is not a perfect fit, please communicate this to the foster home or the Adoption Coordinator, and we will continue searching for a more suitable dog. Your feedback on why a specific dog did not appeal to you will help us refine our search. You should never feel pressured to adopt a dog if you are not completely comfortable. Each dog is loved by their foster families, but we understand that they may not be the right fit for every household. Our primary goal is to find a loving home for each dog. When you identify a dog you wish to adopt, please inform the foster home or the Adoption Coordinator, who will assist you in finalizing the adoption. We recognize that many of our dogs are located far from potential adopters. Depending on the distance, we have various transportation options available that we can discuss before finalizing the adoption. Please be aware that transportation may involve additional costs and often requires you to travel a distance to pick up the dog. We request a minimum donation of $300 from each adopter to help support the care of our dogs. This amount reflects the average veterinary expenses incurred for each dog. At the time of adoption, each dog will be up-to-date on vaccinations (including DHPP, rabies, and bordetella), have a negative heartworm test and fecal exam, be spayed or neutered, and have a microchip. While in foster care, our dogs also receive Heartgard or Interceptor and Frontline Plus. Some dogs may have received additional medical treatment based on their needs while in our care. If a chronic condition is diagnosed during this time, we will inform you of the diagnosis and the treatment plan. If you have any questions about our adoption process or our dogs, please do not hesitate to ask. We are here to help.

How We Work Source of Our Dogs: The majority of our dogs come from animal control facilities, often referred to as dog pounds. These dogs may have been found as strays or abandoned by their previous owners. Additionally, we accept dogs directly from owners who can no longer care for them, usually due to changes in their family situations. In some cases, owners face unfortunate circumstances that compel them to relinquish their beloved pets. Selection Criteria for Dogs: We evaluate potential dogs for rehoming based on three primary criteria. The first and most critical factor is the dog's temperament. Ideally, this would be the sole criterion for accepting a dog. We strive to conduct thorough behavioral assessments before committing to take a dog into our program. If a dog is still with its owner, we require a professional assessment, chosen by us, prior to agreeing to accept the dog. The second consideration is the availability of open foster space. Unfortunately, this relies heavily on timing. Since we do not operate a physical facility, we can only accept a new dog when an existing dog is adopted. Foster space is a significant limiting factor in our capacity to rescue more dogs. The third criterion is our ability to transport the dog from its current location to a foster home. There are instances when a dog is in one state and the available foster space is in another. In such cases, we coordinate transportation, which may involve boarding the dog for a minimum of two weeks, administering vaccinations, and obtaining a health certificate in the dog’s home state before moving it to the foster location. Our capacity to save a dog is contingent on having the necessary funds and volunteers for transportation. Foster Home Locations: Once a dog joins our program, it resides in a foster home located in various states. The dog becomes part of the foster family until it is adopted. Foster parents gain valuable insights into the dog's behavior and can provide potential adopters with detailed information regarding the dog's personality and characteristics. What Motivates Us: We thrive on receiving photos and updates! Knowing that our dogs are thriving in their new homes and that adopters are satisfied is what keeps us motivated in this challenging endeavor. We encourage you to keep us informed about significant events in your dog's life or simply reach out whenever you can. We truly enjoy hearing from you!
