Adoption Process

The adoption process begins with interested adopters completing an initial application. Following this, they will participate in an interview, which can be conducted either by telephone or in person. Once approved, adopters are required to sign an adoption agreement that outlines the minimum standards of care they agree to provide for the pet, as well as their obligation to return the pet if they are unable or unwilling to keep it. The adoption fees for dogs are as follows: $150 for puppies under six months, $125 for young dogs aged six months to four years, and $100 for dogs older than four years. The adoption fees for cats are: $100 for kittens under four months, $85 for young cats aged four months to two years, and $65 for cats older than two years. All of our dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, or, in rare cases, placed under a spay/neuter contract when immediate surgery is not medically advisable. They are also vaccinated according to their age, microchipped, treated for internal and external parasites, and examined by a veterinarian.

Service Areas

The service areas include Ketchikan, Juneau, Metlakatla, Craig, Klawock, Hydaburg, Hoonah, Angoon, and Kake, all located in Alaska.

Southeast Alaska Organization for Animals in Juneau, AK

SOFA was established in December 2012 to address issues of pet overpopulation, abandonment, homelessness, abuse, and neglect in Southeast Alaska. While we operate primarily from Ketchikan and Juneau, our mission reaches out to communities throughout Southeast Alaska that have limited or no resources for animal welfare. In our initial years, we have focused on improving access to essential veterinary services, such as spay/neuter procedures and vaccinations, in areas lacking regular veterinary care. Additionally, we rescue pets, particularly from remote Southeast Alaska communities without shelters or rescue organizations, and help place them in responsible adoptive homes. We also facilitate the transportation of adoptable pets from communities with high euthanasia rates to those with larger populations and better adoption opportunities. Our long-term objective is to empower local, grassroots initiatives to create self-sustaining animal welfare practices within these communities.
