Adoption Process

Our adoption process begins with the submission of an application, which is then reviewed. Following this, we conduct checks with a veterinarian and/or personal references. If these evaluations are satisfactory, we proceed with an informal home visit. Upon approval of the home visit, we review and sign an adoption contract. We also request a tax-deductible donation, which typically does not fully cover the medical expenses incurred for the dog being prepared for adoption. Each rescued dog undergoes a thorough evaluation for a minimum of two weeks prior to adoption, during which we address their medical needs. This may include procedures such as restoring vision for dogs with juvenile cataracts, removing bladder stones, performing dental work, and microchipping.

Schnauzer Rescue of the Carolinas, Inc. in Lenoir, NC

SRC was founded in June 2003 after I went into remission from Lupus (SLE) after being bedridden for more than four years. With the ability to function again but unable to work outside the home, I sought a way to give back. Having always been involved in public service, I started SRC to honor my loyal Mini Schnauzer, Chewie, who had been a faithful companion during my illness. He had even comforted me during severe migraines. Since its inception, SRC has thrived, successfully placing over 2,500 Schnauzers and Honorary Schnauzers into loving adoptive homes. Each dog is placed in a caring foster environment and comes from challenging circumstances, often rescued from puppy mills and shelters. With time and understanding, they transform into wonderful pets. SRC also advocates for spaying and neutering all animals and actively educates the public about the importance of this practice. We conduct microchip clinics to assist elderly pet owners in maintaining their dogs' health despite financial limitations, and we focus on placing adult dogs with senior adopters. I view this work as my calling and intend to dedicate the rest of my life to this important mission.
