Northwoods Humane Society is a humane society located in Hayward, Wisconsin, in Sawyer County, about 70 miles northwest of Duluth, MN. Its mission is to provide a sheltered environment for unwanted animals, find them appropriate homes, and offer medical care, socialization, and training to help them succeed in a new home, with a strong emphasis on promoting responsible pet ownership and spay/neuter. NHS is a no-kill, 501(c)3 nonprofit that receives no local, state, or federal government funding, and its shelter grounds—located four miles east of Hayward on Highway 77—include indoor dog kennels, two cat rooms, an isolation area, a training center, and 85 acres with walking trails and a public dog park called the Bark Park. Every animal cared for by NHS stays with the organization until the right home is found, and the shelter also runs community outreach programs such as spay/neuter financial assistance, pet food donations, and pet behavior consultations.
