Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue is an equine rescue based in Hardy, Virginia, located in Franklin County, where it is one of four animal shelters and rescues serving the area (three others nearby). Founded in 2002, RVHR has taken in more than 425 horses, ponies, mules, and donkeys over the years, with its very first rescued horse, a mare named Nicky, arriving in January 2003. The organization runs a "Final Bid For Freedom" Auction Program to rescue horses at risk of slaughter directly from stockyard sales, and it offers horses for adoption to approved caregivers through a meet-and-greet process. Situated about 70 miles south of Greensboro, NC, RVHR relies on donations, wishlist contributions, and community support to continue its rescue and rehoming work.

Prospective adopters must be 21+, schedule a meet-and-greet with the horse, then request and submit a full application, which goes to the Board of Directors for approval; once approved, they complete additional facility visits, sign a 2-year contract, pay a placement donation fee, and arrange to take the horse home within 30 days.
