Adoption Process

The adoption fees are as follows: $75 for cats under 7 months, $50 for cats over 7 months, $175 for dogs under 7 months, and $120 for dogs over 7 months. All adopters must be at least 18 years old. The adoption contract will require the following information from the adopter: name, contact information, address, reasons for adopting, details about any other pets owned, information about children in the household, and the type of living situation the pet will be in. The contract outlines that the adoption fee is non-refundable and that the adopter assumes responsibility for all future medical care for the pet. The adopter is also required to provide appropriate care and treatment for the pet. If the adoption does not work out, the adopter has 60 days to return the pet to Texas Humane Heroes at no cost. After 60 days, a $95 owner surrender fee will apply. The adopter will take on full legal responsibility for the pet. If the adopter has another dog, a meet-and-greet is highly recommended and usually required to be conducted at our facility under the supervision of an adoption counselor.

Texas Humane Heroes in Leander, TX

Texas Humane Heroes is a no-kill, private, non-profit organization recognized as a 501(c)(3) entity, with dog and cat adoption centers located in Leander, part of the Greater Austin Metropolitan area, and Killeen, Texas. Since its establishment in 1979, Texas Humane Heroes has worked to improve the lives of pets and people through adoption initiatives, low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination clinics, and family-friendly community events. The organization's mission is to eliminate pet homelessness. Texas Humane Heroes is entirely funded through donations, grants, and nominal service fees, without receiving any local, state, or federal government funding. We transform the lives of pets by increasing their chances of finding a loving home, taking animals from shelters with survival rates as low as 5% to a guaranteed chance at a forever home. We collaborate with over 70 municipal shelters across more than 30 counties in Texas. The issue of overcrowded municipal shelters and the euthanasia of pets is a significant challenge that requires a comprehensive approach. Our vision is to create a system that ensures every Texas pet in need can find a loving home.
