Habitat for Horses operates in Haslet, Texas, in Tarrant County, about 15 miles south of Fort Worth, and is one of 24 other animal shelters and rescues located in Tarrant County. Founded in 1998, the organization has grown into an equine rescue and sanctuary caring for more than 300 horses, minis, and donkeys at its 434-acre Miracle Ranch. Its mission centers on rescuing abused and neglected equines and nursing them back to physical and emotional health, offering adoption as well as symbolic virtual adoption/sponsorship for horses that remain in permanent sanctuary care. The rescue also assists law enforcement with seizures and equine abuse cases across the country.

Adoption process

Applicants submit a free online application covering horse experience and references; for ride-sound horses, three ranch visits are required (one to meet, two to assess compatibility on the ground and under saddle), while companion-only horses require just one visit, after which a Coggins test is done before finalizing adoption.
