Black Beauty Ranch is an animal shelter and sanctuary located in Murchiston, Texas, in Henderson County, roughly 70 miles northwest of Dallas—an area that also has 5 other animal shelters or rescues nearby. Founded by author Cleveland Amory, the ranch began in 1979 with a modest 85-acre purchase to house burros rescued from the Grand Canyon basin, where they faced extermination by the National Park Service. It has since grown into a sprawling sanctuary of more than 1,400 acres, taking in thousands of animals over the decades from research laboratories, cruelty cases, roadside zoos, and public lands. Black Beauty Ranch has been part of the Humane Society of the United States family since 2005, continuing its mission of providing lifelong sanctuary and care to rescued animals.
