Adoption Process

During a visit, prospective adopters are required to complete a "Meet Your Match" form, which consists of eight straightforward questions about their preferences for a cat, dog, or both. This program assists staff in pairing adopters with animals that are likely to be the best fit for their household, taking into account factors such as activity level, special needs, and any personal restrictions. Once the questionnaire is completed, each potential adopter will have the chance to collaborate with a staff member to meet suitable matches in the hopes of finding their ideal pet. After being matched with an animal, the adopter must fill out an application for that specific pet. The application, which is a simple two-sided form, requests information regarding landlords, veterinarian details for any current pets, two non-related references, and several multiple-choice questions about the new pet's compatibility with household members and circumstances under which the adopter might need to return the animal. The Center for Animal Health and Welfare generally does not facilitate same-day adoptions; however, applications are typically processed within 72 hours. We encourage adopters to inform their landlord, veterinarian, and references that we will be contacting them. Once an application is completed and approved, adopters can schedule an appointment to pick up the animal within 72 hours of approval. Due to a high demand for intakes and our commitment as a no-kill shelter, we cannot hold animals; we can only take in as many animals as we are able to adopt out. At the time of pickup, adopters will receive all medical information regarding the pet's care while at CAHW, including any completed blood work. Each animal is typically spayed or neutered, microchipped, tested for felv/fiv or 4DX, and up to date on vaccinations (Rabies, Bordetella, Distemper), as well as dewormers and flea treatments, unless otherwise advised by our veterinarian. Adopters must sign a contract acknowledging their responsibility for the animal's care and medical needs, and they have 90 days to return the pet if necessary. Adoption fees vary by animal type, typically ranging from $25 to $200 for cats, depending on age and breed, and from $50 to $300 for dogs, based on age, size, and breed.

The Center for Animal Health and Welfare in Easton, PA

Established in 1913, The Center for Animal Health and Welfare, previously known as the Northampton County SPCA, operates as a private, non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status. We are independent and not affiliated with any other SPCA or ASPCA, nor are we a government agency. In 2003, we made a commitment to becoming a no-kill shelter, focusing on saving lives and providing a safe and healthy environment for animals. We have enhanced our foster program, increased adoption rates, and implemented a low-cost spay/neuter initiative. Ninety percent of our income is derived from fundraising, donations, and bequests, along with various grant applications. The remainder of our revenue comes from adoption fees, relinquishment fees, memberships, and agreements with some local municipalities to care for their stray animals. We appreciate the support from municipalities, though not all participate, with Northampton County contributing approximately $5,000. We operate on an annual budget of $900,000, with significant expenses including veterinary care, medical supplies, kennel supplies, spay/neuter costs, insurance, utilities, and payroll. Our primary goal is to find loving homes for the animals in our care. We do not impose a fixed time limit on animals but keep them as long as they remain adoptable.
