Indiana County Humane Society is a nonprofit animal welfare organization located at 191 Airport Road in Indiana, Pennsylvania, about 45 miles west of Pittsburgh. It is one of two shelters serving Indiana County, and its mission is to prevent cruelty and suffering to animals, provide safe haven and compassion to animals in its care, place unwanted animals in permanent, responsible homes, investigate and prosecute cases of animal cruelty, and reduce companion animal overpopulation. When matching dogs with adopters, the shelter takes dogs out of their kennels to meet potential adopters rather than judging them on kennel behavior, working with each visitor to find the best fit for their lifestyle before finalizing an adoption. The organization also maintains Harper's Fund, an emergency rescue and medical expense fund for animals requiring extensive veterinary care.

Adoption process

Submit an application (online, by mail, or in person), after which the shelter contacts your references and vet, and once approved you schedule an in-person appointment to meet and select a pet (approval is valid for 6 months); adopters must meet criteria such as being 21+, having landlord consent if renting, and agreeing to spay/neuter and indoor care.
