Adoption Process

OCHS is dedicated to finding the right home for each animal, ensuring they can thrive and build a lifelong bond with their family. If you are interested in adopting an animal, you must complete an adoption application, which can be submitted online or in person at the shelter. Each application will be reviewed to assess whether your home meets the specific needs of the pet. Before your application can be fully approved, you will need to arrange a meeting with the animal in person. Please note that some animals may be in foster care or away from the facility, so it is advisable to call ahead to confirm their availability for your visit. If you already have dogs in your home, a meet and greet with the potential new pet will be necessary. In the event that multiple applications are received for the same animal, staff will select the home that best meets the animal's needs. Submitting an application does not guarantee that you will be able to adopt the animal. All adopters must be at least 18 years old and provide a valid photo ID. If you are renting your home, you will need to obtain approval from your landlord. We also reserve the right to conduct a home visit before granting approval for adoption.

Oregon Coast Humane Society in Florence, OR

The Oregon Coast Humane Society, based in Florence, Oregon, is a no-kill shelter that operates within the limits of its housing capacity to address the animal welfare needs of Western Lane County. Our organization is made up of dedicated volunteers and professional staff who are committed to helping homeless and abused companion animals in the region. We also focus on educating the community about issues related to animal welfare, including cruelty and pet overpopulation. Founded in 1992 as the Florence Area Humane Society, the organization began when a group of concerned animal advocates came together to find ways to support local companion animals. The shelter was completed in August 1996, when the first animals were moved in from foster homes. Over the following years, the facility was adapted to meet the growing needs of the homeless pet population, including expanding the cattery for better isolation and stray facilities, adding nurseries for kittens and puppies, and converting storage space into staff and meeting rooms, as well as an additional office. In the spring of 2016, the organization changed its name from Florence Area Humane Society to Oregon Coast Humane Society to better reflect the broader area it serves. This shelter is the only facility providing care for homeless cats and dogs within a 60-mile radius of its location in Florence.
