Standardbred Retirement Foundation in Freehold, NJ

The Standardbred Retirement Foundation, based in Freehold, New Jersey, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit founded in 1989 dedicated to rescuing Standardbred horses from the threat of slaughter and securing loving homes with a lifelong commitment to follow-up and guardianship. Some of its rescued and rehabilitated horses go on to serve with mounted police units, including the NYC mounted police. Located in Monmouth County, the organization operates alongside 18 other animal shelters and rescues in the county and sits about 20 miles north of Edison, NJ. Through education, outreach, and community partnerships, SRF works to promote lifetime care for horses and connect adoptable Standardbreds with new homes across the country.

Adoption process

Applicants must be 18+, have a barn or 3-sided shelter, fresh water access, proper fencing, and horse care/riding experience; the process involves filling out and signing the adoption application/agreement, sending photos of the farm/boarding facility for review, and submitting a $20 application fee, after which SRF calls to review the applicant's experience and preferences.
