Baja Animal Sanctuary is a no-kill animal shelter based in San Diego, California, part of San Diego County, which is home to 40 other animal shelters and rescues in the database and sits roughly 30 miles southwest of San Diego. Founded in March 1997 by American Sunny Benedict, who started the organization with just $180 in donations after seeing malnourished, homeless dogs and cats roaming the streets, the sanctuary was officially incorporated in 2000 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. It cares for dogs and cats, housing close to 400 canine residents and 75 feline residents at any given time, providing food, medical care, and shelter for as long as the animals need it, and euthanizing only in cases of extreme illness. The sanctuary holds weekly dog adoption events in San Diego County and offers full-time cat adoptions through a PETsMART location in Vista, California, relying entirely on public donations since it receives no assistance from the Mexican government.
