Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS) is an animal shelter located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in East Baton Rouge Parish, where 7 other animal shelters or rescues also operate; CAAWS sits about 10 miles northwest of Baton Rouge. Founded in 1979, it is the first and oldest nonprofit in the Greater Baton Rouge area dedicated to animal welfare, functioning both as an adoption shelter for homeless dogs and cats and as an educational resource promoting responsible pet ownership, humane treatment of animals, and spaying and neutering. Beyond East Baton Rouge Parish, CAAWS extends its educational and spay/neuter programs into surrounding parishes, including Ascension, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana. The organization also partners with Pets for Patriots to help veterans find companion pets.
