Animal Care Society, Inc. is a nonprofit animal shelter located in Louisville, Kentucky, in Jefferson County, roughly 15 miles west of downtown Louisville — one of 13 other animal shelters and rescues also based in Jefferson County. Founded in 1984, it was Kentucky's first no-kill shelter and has since placed well over 17,000 dogs and cats into loving homes. ACS is not affiliated with any other humane organization, receives no government funding, and is supported entirely by grants and donations from the local community. The shelter focuses on rescuing and rehoming companion dogs and cats, giving special attention to neglected, abused, senior, and medically needy animals, and does not euthanize animals for time, space, or treatable conditions.
