The Granite City Association for the Protection of Animals (GCAPA) is an animal shelter located in Granite City, Illinois, in Madison County, about 10 miles southwest of St. Louis, MO, and one of 17 other animal shelters and rescues also serving Madison County. Its motto is "Homeless not hopeless," reflecting a no-kill mission that began in March 1972 when ten volunteers recognized the need for a no-kill shelter in southern Illinois, first operating out of a member's basement. In 1979 the organization launched a building fund, and the current shelter building, situated on donated land, took five years to construct. GCAPA continues to rely on donations, volunteers, and community support, including an Amazon wishlist, to care for the animals in its charge.
