Adoption Process

Adoption Fees The adoption fees are as follows: - Dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens: $150 - Two kittens: $175 - Senior pets (dogs aged 8 and older, cats aged 10 and older): $75 Adoption fees can be paid by cash or check; we do not accept credit cards. These fees cover a comprehensive medical examination by a veterinarian, which includes a Feline Leukemia and FIV test for cats, as well as Rabies and Distemper vaccinations, deworming, and spaying/neutering. For dogs, the services include a Heartworm check, spaying/neutering, Rabies and Distemper vaccinations, deworming, and kennel cough prevention. During your first visit to our shelter, you will need to complete an adoption survey. This survey helps us identify animals that are likely to be a good fit for your home. One of our adoption counselors will then discuss your preferences and the available pets that match your criteria. Potential adopters will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with the animals in a designated visiting room, as we believe this setting provides a better understanding of the animal's behavior compared to encountering them in their cages. Please plan to spend at least 45 minutes to an hour during your initial visit to our shelter.

Community Animal Rescue Effort in Skokie, IL

Community Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.) is a 501(c)(3) all-volunteer organization dedicated to finding homes for unwanted and abandoned animals. We serve as an educational and counseling resource for communities on Chicago's North Shore, assisting both current and prospective pet owners while working to reduce pet overpopulation. Operating from Evanston's municipal animal shelter, C.A.R.E. has facilitated the adoption of thousands of dogs and cats since our founding in 1987, many of which would have otherwise faced euthanasia. We provide medical treatment and oversee all adoptions for the shelter animals. Each day, more than 100 C.A.R.E. volunteers take on the responsibility of caring for all shelter animals, dedicating between 3 to over 30 hours each week to various tasks both at the shelter and in the community. These tasks include walking and exercising dogs and cats, cleaning cages and kennel areas, bathing and grooming animals, and working with frightened or anti-social pets. Volunteers also manage veterinary care, including paying for treatments, transporting animals to clinics, and administering medications as directed by veterinarians. In addition to daily care, our volunteers ensure that animals are fed and hydrated during evenings, weekends, and holidays, and they maintain cleanliness by washing bowls, toys, and bedding. They work closely with Evanston Animal Wardens to comply with city regulations and maintain accreditation by the Department of Agriculture. Volunteers conduct thorough interviews with potential adopters to match them with suitable animals and handle all adoption paperwork, including follow-up programs. C.A.R.E. supplements the city's food budget with volunteer funds to provide high-quality food for shelter animals and purchases additional equipment not covered by the city budget to ensure quality care. We engage in ongoing fundraising efforts to cover all expenses and conduct community outreach programs to educate residents on responsible pet care. Volunteers are also called upon to foster animals in their homes during times of overcrowding at the shelter or when animals require special care.
