Adoption Process

Animal House Shelter is dedicated to providing a healthy, stress-free, and comfortable environment for the animals in our care. To minimize stress, we do not allow walk-through viewing of the dogs at the shelter. During your visit, an adoption counselor will guide you through the adoption process and introduce you to as many dogs as you wish to meet, ensuring the best match for you, your family, and your new pet. The cats reside in a spacious free-roam cat room, allowing them to socialize with each other, the staff, volunteers, and potential adopters throughout the day. At Animal House, we recognize that each animal has a unique personality. We treat these animals as if they were our own, and we are committed to finding them loving, permanent homes. To adopt a pet, please note the following requirements: 1. Adoption donations must be made in cash, money order, traveler's check, cashier's check, or by VISA, Discover, or MasterCard. Personal checks are not accepted. 2. You must be at least 21 years old to adopt. 3. All household members, including any dogs you currently own, must be present during the final adoption process. Cats do not need to be brought to the shelter as we will conduct a cat compatibility test here to minimize stress. 4. Any dogs and cats you currently own must be up to date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered before visiting the shelter for adoption. 5. Please complete and submit the online application. A veterinary reference is required if you have previously owned a pet. 6. All adoptions may be subject to a home check prior to finalization. 7. We do not permit anyone to place a dog on hold; this policy is strictly enforced. 8. Adoption donations for dogs and puppies range from $50 to $500, as indicated on each individual profile. 9. Adoption donations for cats and kittens range from $75 to $250, also noted on their individual profiles. 10. Many older dogs and cats have reduced adoption donations, which are specified on their profiles on the Adoptable Dogs or Adoptable Cats pages. 11. Senior citizens are encouraged to inquire about our Senior to Senior Program, which waives the adoption donation for individuals 65 years or older who adopt a pet 8 years or older, with an approved application. 12. At the time of adoption, an adoption counselor will assist you through the process, answer your questions, and ask questions regarding your adoption. 13. Our adoption hours are seven days a week from 11 AM to 7 PM on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. On Tuesdays, we are open from 11 AM to 4 PM, and on Saturdays, from 9 AM to 7 PM. No appointment is necessary. 14. We maintain the same hours on holidays. 15. All animals are microchipped, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested or tested for FeLV/FIV, and vaccinated. They receive monthly Heartgard Plus and Frontline Plus while in our care. Pet insurance is also available through ShelterCare.com. 16. When adopting a cat or kitten, please ensure you have an appropriate carrier. You may bring your own or purchase a cardboard carrier for $10. Please remember that all other dogs and family members must be present at the shelter for the final adoption.

Animal House Shelter, Inc. in Huntley, IL

Animal House Shelter is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that operates a no-kill shelter for dogs and cats of all breeds. Established in June 2002, the shelter provides refuge and care for abused, neglected, and abandoned animals, particularly those at risk of euthanasia in other facilities. After rehabilitation, these animals are carefully matched with potential adopters and placed in loving, permanent homes. To date, over 23,000 pets have found new families through Animal House Shelter. At Animal House Shelter, we recognize that each animal has its own unique personality. We treat our dogs and cats with the same care and respect we would offer our own pets, ensuring they receive the comfort they deserve while we strive to find them suitable forever homes. The pets at Animal House Shelter receive the highest standard of veterinary care, and no treatment is withheld if it can enhance their quality of life. We prioritize the socialization and happiness of our animals; dogs enjoy daily walks four to five times, while cats are housed in a spacious, whimsical free-roaming environment. Our dedicated staff and volunteers provide loving care and attention to all animals. Every dog and cat at the shelter is vaccinated—including the rabies vaccine if they are old enough—neutered, microchipped, dewormed, and tested for heartworm (in dogs) or FeLV/FIV (in cats). Dogs are also placed on heartworm preventative medication, and all animals receive monthly treatment with Frontline Plus. Animal House Shelter is committed to caring for special needs animals. We address any medical issues or surgeries required for our rescues, including treatments for heartworm, cruciate ligament repairs, patella surgeries, FHO surgeries, heart surgeries, diabetes management, anxiety disorders, and autoimmune deficiencies, among others. On average, we take in at least one animal each week needing such care. We believe that no animal should face euthanasia due to illness or injury. Many of these animals have already faced neglect, and we feel a responsibility to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. This mission defines who we are at Animal House Shelter. The costs associated with these treatments can be substantial, and we rely on community support to ensure that these vulnerable animals receive the care they need.
