Sumter Humane Society in Americus, GA

Sumter Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Americus, Georgia, roughly 50 miles northwest of Columbus, GA, serving Sumter County. Founded in 1984, it was established to care for orphaned cats and dogs affected by abandonment, overpopulation, and human neglect, and it operates under an all-volunteer board of directors with a small paid staff. Many animals at the shelter receive vaccinations and medical care for the first time in their lives, and each year the organization transfers over 500 dogs and cats to rescue facilities across the country while placing over 200 more directly into new homes. Through its Spay/Neuter Assistance Program and other grant-funded efforts, it also sterilizes more than 200 community-owned dogs and cats annually, relying entirely on donations, grants, and endowments since it receives no state, federal, or national humane organization funding.
