About this shelter
Lorrimer Sanctuary in Franklin Lakes, NJ
Lorrimer Sanctuary sits in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, roughly 5 miles south of Paterson, and operates as a wildlife sanctuary and nature center under the New Jersey Audubon Society. The property was bequeathed to New Jersey Audubon by Ms. Lucine L. Lorrimer in 1956, and the main house—parts of which date back to the late 1700s—now serves as the visitors' center and sanctuary office. The 14-acre grounds feature a self-guiding trail system through second-growth woods of oak, maple, ash, and beech, along with a winter bird feeding station, interpretive displays, hands-on exhibits, and a gift shop supporting the sanctuary. As a protected wildlife sanctuary, all plants and animals on the property may not be harmed, harassed, or removed, and the center welcomes visitors Wednesday 10:00 AM–7:00 PM and Thursday through Sunday 10:00 AM–4:00 PM.
