About this shelter
Northeast Equine Sanctuary in Albion, ME
Northeast Equine Sanctuary is an equine rescue located in Albion, Maine, about 35 miles northeast of Bangor. It is one of four state-licensed animal shelters operated by GFAS-accredited Peace Ridge Sanctuary, and it built on Peace Ridge's equine rescue program that had already been running for more than twenty years alongside its farmed animal and companion animal work. In 2022 it opened a dedicated equine rescue and rehabilitation center, built on a donated 640-acre parcel, featuring a large horse barn with surgical space, run-in style barns, and on-site housing for a live-in steward and around-the-clock care attendant. The sanctuary's mission is to provide comprehensive rescue, rehabilitation, emergency response, and state services for vulnerable horses in Maine, working to keep animals out of the auction and slaughter pipeline, and its adoption contracts require that any placed horse always be returned to the sanctuary if it can no longer be kept, guaranteeing every animal a safe home for life.
