The Horse Shelter in Los Cerrillos, NM

The Horse Shelter is an equine rescue located in Los Cerrillos, New Mexico, about 20 miles north of Santa Fe. It rescues abused, abandoned, and neglected horses from throughout New Mexico, taking in horses of varying ages and training levels—from unstarted young geldings to older non-riding companions—and offers them for adoption as riding or companion horses. The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and relies on sponsorships, donations, and a resale store to support the horses in its care. It is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Adoption process

Adopters must review and agree to the Adoption and Placement Agreement, complete an Adoption Application (and a Riding Experience Checklist for riding horses), then have the ranch manager schedule a visit/test-ride, undergo an on-site inspection of the horse's future living facilities, and pay the adoption fee in full at pickup.
