Adoption Process

Prospective adopters fill out an adoption application detailing their household and lifestyle, then meet with approved animals (dog-to-dog visits required for dogs, and all household members must attend); if approved, the adoption is finalized in 15-30 minutes with photo ID and payment, and applicants must be 18 or older.

Bangor Humane Society is a nonprofit humane society located in Bangor, Maine, about 3 miles southwest of the city center, serving over 200 communities across northern and eastern Maine since 1869. Its mission is to facilitate the human-animal bond by re-homing and rehabilitating homeless pets through adoption, working with dogs, cats, and other small animals, including bonded pairs and pets with special medical needs like FeLV/FIV or diabetes. The shelter is open Monday through Saturday from 1:00–6:00 PM and is closed on Sundays, and it also runs foster care, volunteer, and humane education programs to support animals in the community.
