Champaign County Humane Society is a full-service animal shelter located in Champaign, Illinois, about 70 miles west of Springfield. It provides companion animals with essential medical care in a healthy environment to prepare them for adoption into new loving homes, and it offers humane education and various programs supporting responsible pet ownership while working to prevent abandonment, cruelty, and neglect. The shelter opened its first location in 1954 and has since helped thousands of animals find loving homes. It is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:00–7:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00–5:00 PM, and it operates as an independent nonprofit unaffiliated with any level of government.

Adoption process

Visit the shelter to meet animals, fill out an adoption questionnaire that staff reviews with you, get tentatively approved (processing takes 24–48 hours), then complete a "go home" appointment where you sign a contract and pay the adoption fee; applicants must be 18+, have landlord approval if renting, and all cats, dogs, and rabbits are spayed/neutered before adoption.
