Best Friends of Baker Inc.

Best Friends of Baker, Inc. is a non-profit organization classified as a 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation. Our dedicated volunteers work to ensure that pets are treated humanely. We provide foster homes for rescued animals and strive to find them permanent, loving homes. Our goal is to establish an animal shelter in Baker City, Oregon, which will enable us to offer the best possible services to both pets and families. We are currently in the process of raising funds to support this facility. The organization was founded in 1988 when two individuals rescued a pregnant and abused dog from a group of individuals involved in drug use. This dog, later named Lucky, underwent a transformation; she was house-trained, received socialization training, and ultimately found a loving home with children, where she lived happily until the end of her life. Following this rescue, a small group of compassionate individuals came together to replicate Lucky's success. In 1989, they initiated the process of applying for non-profit status with the federal government. After nearly a year of correspondence, the organization was officially granted non-profit status in 1990, which continues to this day. The original group of 20 volunteers worked tirelessly, making a significant impact by assisting over 300 dogs and 300 cats through various services, including vaccinations, deworming, spaying/neutering, finding homes, and reuniting pets with their owners. However, after six years, the group diminished to a small number of volunteers who, despite their dedication, became exhausted, leading to a period of inactivity. In 2005, Best Friends of Baker, Inc. welcomed new supporters who aimed to revive the organization's mission and establish long-term goals, including the creation of a permanent shelter in Baker City.
