Adoption process

The adoption process begins with the completion of an online adoption application. Within two business days, you should receive a confirmation email indicating that Helping Hands Basset Rescue has received your application. If you do not receive this confirmation, please submit another application. When filling out the application, it is important to include your veterinarian's name, address, and phone number, as we will contact them for a reference. This step is crucial to ensure that your current and past pets have received all necessary vaccinations, heartworm preventatives, and appropriate medical care. An adoption coordinator will reach out to you to discuss which type of basset hound would be the best fit for your home. We strive to match the right dog with the right forever home, as a successful adoption relies on selecting a suitable basset and understanding its care requirements. Through our foster homes, we assess each dog's specific traits and preferences, which helps us identify any potential compatibility issues, such as those related to children or other pets. We will discuss each basset's individual likes and dislikes before proceeding with the adoption. Additionally, Helping Hands Basset Rescue conducts home visits to ensure that your home is suitable for a basset hound. We request that all family members, including pets, be present during this visit. This allows us to confirm that your home can provide a loving, comfortable, and permanent environment for a rescued basset hound. Please be aware that we may receive multiple applications for a single dog, and our limited volunteer staff may not be able to contact everyone personally. If you do not hear from us, you are welcome to reapply in 30 days, as the right dog for your home may not have been available at the time of your original application. It is particularly challenging to place rescued dogs in homes with small children (under 4) due to temperament concerns.
