Adoption Process
If you are ready to adopt a boxer from Legacy Boxer Rescue, the first step is to complete the Adoption Application in full. Before proceeding with the adoption process, please ensure that you meet the following requirements: Applications are accepted only from individuals residing within the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. If you live outside this area, please contact us for an individual assessment of your situation. All existing pets must be fully vetted, which includes being spayed or neutered and up to date on all vaccinations. This requirement applies to all pets, including cats. All dogs and cats must also be tested for heartworms and be on a heartworm prevention regimen. If you purchase these products through an online pharmacy, such as petcarerx.com, we will need to see your purchase history from that pharmacy. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and living independently. If you are under 21 and living with your parents, we ask that they complete the adoption application on your behalf. For families with children under the age of ten, additional criteria must be met before a boxer can be placed in your home. We are happy to discuss these criteria with interested families. All domesticated pets, except feral cats, must reside indoors. Our boxers are not placed in homes where they will be kept as outdoor companions. We do not place two female dogs in the same household due to common dominance issues between females. This policy helps improve the chances of a successful adoption. After we receive your completed application, you can expect the following steps. We understand that this process may seem extensive, but we are committed to finding the right match for both the boxer and your family. Our volunteers, who often have full-time jobs and families, strive to process applications promptly, and we appreciate your patience. A volunteer will verify the personal and veterinary references listed in your application. Since most veterinary practices require client permission to release records, please inform your veterinarian in advance to facilitate this process. Once references are checked and deemed acceptable, an LBR volunteer will schedule a home visit to ensure a safe and loving environment for the boxer. You will be asked to indicate any specific boxers you are interested in adopting from our website. Please note that multiple applicants may express interest in the same boxer. In such cases, we will select the home that we believe is best suited for the boxer, rather than adopting on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a suitable boxer is identified, we will arrange for you to meet the dog. This usually occurs at one of our "Meet Our Boxer" events or directly through the foster family. We request that all family members, as well as any current pets, be present during the visit. In some instances, we may determine that a particular boxer is not the right match for your family. We take the placement of our boxers seriously, as many have experienced unstable situations prior to rescue. We strive to ensure that every placement is permanent and are happy to explain our reasoning if needed. Once your application is approved and you have found the right boxer, there are a few final steps in the process. Our adoption donation ranges from $125 to $300, depending on the individual dog. This amount is based on various factors, including the dog’s age and prior adoption history with LBR. All boxers are examined for health issues, spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, heartworm tested, and are protected against heartworms, fleas, and ticks while in foster care. We utilize products such as Revolution and Heartgard for prevention. While our volunteers work with the boxers on basic obedience, we recommend that new owners seek training from a facility that emphasizes positive training techniques. At the time of adoption, you will be required to sign a legally binding adoption agreement. Should you ever need to relinquish your boxer, he or she must be returned to LBR as outlined in the agreement. You will also agree to keep the provided Legacy Boxer Rescue tag on your boxer at all times and to notify us if the boxer is lost or stolen. We have resources available to assist in locating your boxer in such events. Please prepare for the arrival of your new boxer by reviewing our recommended list of supplies to have on hand for when he or she comes home.
