Adoption Process
To assist in selecting the most suitable pet for adoption, please review our adoption guidelines and procedures. You will be required to sign a contract upon adopting your pet. FMAR recommends a minimum donation of $80 for a cat or kitten, $150 for mixed breed adult dogs, and $175 for puppies and purebred dogs. We accept cash, checks, money orders, Visa, and MasterCard. This donation helps cover some of the veterinary expenses incurred for each animal, including spaying/neutering, de-worming, heartworm testing and treatment if necessary, FeLuk/FIV testing, vaccinations, and other required medications. We strive to ensure that you adopt the healthiest animal possible. Please note that the animals available for adoption are rescue animals and may have been exposed to various diseases. Like human illnesses, these conditions can have an incubation period of several weeks. If your adopted animal shows signs of illness within the first three days, please contact the shelter immediately. For symptoms that arise after three days, take the pet to your veterinarian for treatment. We will not place a pet in a home if any of the following conditions apply: - The prospective home has an unspayed or unneutered pet. - The pet will be left outside unattended for extended periods. - The pet is intended as a gift. - Any household member is afraid of the pet. - Any household member exhibits aggression towards the pet. Once a pet is placed, FMAR reserves the right to: - Check on the pet at any time to ensure its well-being. - Remove the pet from the home if any conditions of the adoption contract are violated or if FMAR deems the environment unsafe. - Require that if you can no longer keep your pet, you must return it to FMAR and not to any other individual or shelter. Adoption Procedures The first step in the adoption process is selecting the right pet for your home environment. Consider the following: - Size of Pet: Is your home suitable for a large pet? If you live in a building with pet restrictions, is there a size limit? If you rent, please bring a copy of your lease indicating that pets are allowed and any limitations. - Energy Level and Exercise Needs: Does your home have access to a safe exercise area? If you have a yard, is it adequately fenced? Is the fence tall enough for the type of dog you are interested in? If you do not have a fence, do you have a plan for potty breaks? Do you have enough time each day to provide the necessary exercise and companionship for the pet? - Compatibility: Do you have children or frequent young visitors? If so, does the pet you are considering get along with them? Do you have other pets, and will the new pet get along with them? If you are adopting a dog and already have one at home, you must bring your current dog with you during your visit. All other household members should also be present. Adoption Application FMAR's adoption application is designed to match our pets with the most suitable environments, lifestyles, and owner expectations. Please be honest when completing the form and communicating with an FMAR adoption team member. All applications are reviewed for approval. If you plan to attend an FMAR event, it will expedite the process if you download, complete, and bring the questionnaire with you. Alternatively, you may scan and email your application to [email protected]. Questionnaires are available on our website. Please refrain from mailing applications, as the animal may be adopted by the time it reaches us. Attend an Adoption Event to Meet an Animal You are welcome to visit an adoption event to meet one of our adoptable animals. Please email the shelter at [email protected] with the pet's name and the event you wish to attend. Send your request at least three days prior to the event. Adoption Contract After selecting a pet and receiving approval for your adoption questionnaire, you will be given a packet and asked to sign an adoption contract. The packet will include the pet's medical records, care tips, and other informational materials, including instructions on how to activate your free month of health insurance. Please check your email upon returning home and follow the instructions if you do not receive the email. FMAR aims to make your adoption experience enjoyable for both your family and the pet. We will work diligently to match the right pet with your family. If you have any questions during the process, please do not hesitate to ask, as all inquiries are important to ensure the best possible start for both the pet and your family.

Friends of Michigan Animal's Rescue in Belleville, MI
FMAR is a no-kill animal shelter dedicated to the welfare of animals. Our facility consists of two separate buildings: one for cats, which includes a screened patio, and another for dogs, featuring a large yard for their exercise and play. Once we welcome an animal into our shelter, it remains with us for its lifetime. Some animals have been with FMAR for several years before finding their forever homes. We rescue animals from local pounds, accept them from the public as space permits, and sometimes receive animals left at our doorstep. Our organization is entirely staffed by volunteers who share a profound love for animals. Our shelters are cleaned thoroughly twice daily, and all dogs receive daily walks or playtime in the yard. In addition, we have a well-established Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program, provide educational programs for children, and offer opportunities for individuals to volunteer and complete community service hours. FMAR is a respected and recognized organization within our community, and we are committed to providing valuable services to both the people and animals in our area.
