Adoption Process

The adoption process begins with a review of applications by an AMMF volunteer. This includes conducting background checks and verifying veterinary and personal references. An AMMF volunteer will also perform a home visit, which involves meeting with the applicant and all family members residing in the home. All dogs older than five months are spayed or neutered, have up-to-date vaccinations, are microchipped, dewormed, and tested for heartworm and Lyme disease. The adoption fee for dogs older than five months is $295, while the fee for puppies up to five months old is $300. For families that already have other pets or children, the adoption will initially be on a foster-to-adopt basis for a minimum of two weeks. This period allows everyone to adjust to one another. If the adjustment goes well, the adoption will be finalized with a legally binding contract signed by all parties. Should the family be unable to keep the dog at any point, the dog must be returned to AMMF.

My name is Hollie Hastings, and I have a deep love for animals, especially dogs. They provide unconditional love and exhibit remarkable forgiveness and trust. Approximately ten years ago, my family adopted a six-month-old Rottweiler named Harley from our local SPCA, and he quickly became one of the best companions we could have hoped for. When Harley was ten months old, he developed a limp, which led us to consult a veterinarian. We discovered that he had a rare cancer in his spine. Harley underwent surgery but soon faced challenges with mobility. During this time, we began fostering a dog named Bandit, who would play with Harley's toys, which saddened Harley. However, after starting radiation therapy, Harley began to regain his ability to walk, and we believe that Bandit's presence played a significant role in his recovery. After completing a total of 15 radiation treatments, Harley was finally able to walk, stand, and take care of his needs independently. It was incredibly rewarding to see him improve; he no longer required assistance or a wheelchair. Tragically, at the age of four, the cancer returned, spreading rapidly throughout his body, and we faced the difficult decision to say goodbye. Letting go of Harley was one of the hardest experiences of our lives. We cherish the memories we created with him, and though he is no longer with us, he remains in our thoughts and hearts. I realize now that every moment we shared was precious, despite the challenges he faced during his treatments. After losing Harley, I often reflected on the plight of older dogs in shelters and questioned how someone could abandon their pet. Bandit, now nine years old, is also slowing down and struggling with mobility, but I would never consider giving him up because of his age. When the time comes to part with Bandit, it will be a heartbreaking experience. The love and experiences I shared with Harley and Bandit inspired me to start a rescue organization. My goal is to help pets in need of new homes due to circumstances such as death, deployment, nursing home placements, or relocation. AMMF is dedicated to finding the most suitable homes for every dog that enters our rescue, with a special focus on placing older dogs with senior citizens. Additionally, we aim to bring dogs to nursing homes, VA hospitals, and schools, as they have a unique ability to bring joy and comfort to those in need. We also strive to educate children about responsible pet ownership, covering topics such as spaying and neutering, dog walking, feeding, and how to approach unfamiliar dogs.
