Adoption Process

The adoption process begins with the submission of an application that includes references. We will contact the references provided and then arrange a home visit, which must include all family members. Following the home visit, an adoption contract will need to be signed to finalize the adoption. Adoption fees vary based on the age of the dog, starting at $450 for dogs under two years old and decreasing to $100 for dogs over ten years old.

Northstar Shih Tzu Rescue (NorthStar/NSSTR) is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu mix dogs. We are committed to benefiting both these dogs and our community. Operating as a no-kill rescue, we provide essential rescue and adoption services, along with outreach programs aimed at enhancing the welfare of these companion animals, educating the public, and positively impacting the lives of both pets and people. Located in Excelsior, Minnesota, NSSTR actively rescues Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu mix dogs from hazardous environments and overcrowded shelters, with the primary goal of placing them in loving, permanent homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs, ensuring they receive vaccinations, microchipping, spaying or neutering, and other necessary medical care. Rehabilitation occurs in carefully selected foster homes. In addition to our rescue efforts, we serve as a valuable resource for the community and pet owners by providing education on the importance of adopting animals in need and promoting responsible pet ownership. This includes advocating for spaying/neutering, proper nutrition, and positive behavior training. We aim to raise awareness about companion animal overpopulation and the issues related to commercial breeding, while offering solutions to reduce the euthanasia of adoptable animals. We collaborate with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue organizations, and humane societies to ensure that these animals receive the care and attention they deserve.
