Whiskers in Salt Lake City, UT
Whiskers is a fully volunteer-run nonprofit dedicated to rescuing cats. We primarily serve animals from municipal shelters in Davis, Weber, and Salt Lake counties, while also taking in animals from surrounding areas as our resources and space allow. In 2019, our volunteers rescued over 200 cats, successfully placing 158 of them into permanent homes. We focus on helping those most at risk in shelters, including older cats, those with special needs, and medical cases. Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic in 2020, Whiskers rescued 132 animals and found loving homes for 113. In 2021, we continued our mission by rescuing 128 animals and adopting out 118. Whiskers emphasizes the importance of caring for senior cats, who are often overlooked due to their age and medical needs. Our approach prioritizes quality over quantity, recognizing that some cats require time to heal and undergo extensive medical treatment. Our efforts yield remarkable results, and we also rescue kittens each year, often from precarious situations, whom we affectionately refer to as future seniors. Whiskers is dedicated to helping those in genuine need. As a foster-based organization, we do not operate a physical facility and are continually seeking foster homes. Shelter animals deeply appreciate the love and comfort that a home provides. Cats from Whiskers are available for adoption by appointment or during our events at the Petco locations in Bountiful and Farmington, Utah. We proudly partner with Petco, where our cats can be found in their habitats. Our mission is to reduce the euthanasia of high-risk pets in Utah. We achieve this goal through three primary actions: rescuing high-risk pets from local shelters, focusing on seniors, medical cases, and special needs animals; providing education and resources to keep pets in homes while promoting spay and neuter programs; and offering veterinary care to initially less adoptable animals to restore their health for adoption. As a member of the Best Friends Animal Society and the No-Kill Utah coalition, we are committed to ending pet homelessness in Utah. We encourage you to explore our programs, get involved, and help us save lives. We are driven by the understanding that this population of cats is severely underserved and in need of advocates. They require time to heal both physically and emotionally, and we are dedicated to helping them regain trust and find homes that are the best fit for them as individuals.
