Adoption Process

We take great pride in ensuring successful matches between families and dogs. To facilitate this, we do not allow same-day adoptions, as we believe it is crucial for both the dog and the family to be a good fit for each other. Our adoption process involves several steps, including speaking with references, contacting your veterinarian, and meeting all household members, both human and animal. Our goal is to ensure that our dogs will be happy in their new homes, and our thorough process supports this objective. Although you cannot take a dog home on the same day, we assure you that the wait will be worthwhile. The process we follow is straightforward, but it may take a few days to complete. If you are interested in a specific dog, please reach out to us for an adoption application. Completing this application does not commit you to adopting a dog; it simply gathers information such as whether you have a fenced yard and lists your references. Meet and greet sessions typically occur during our weekend adoption events, at the foster home, or sometimes at your residence. We request that all family members who will live with the dog, including any other pets, be present. This allows us to observe your interactions and address any questions you may have. Following the meeting, if you decide to proceed with the adoption, we will contact your references, conduct a background check, and speak with your veterinarian. The next step is a home visit, during which we will assess your yard, check the fence, and observe the living environment for the dog. We will provide suggestions to help facilitate a smooth transition for the dog. Often, we will bring the dog with us to this visit, and if everything is satisfactory, we may leave the dog with you that day. This visit typically lasts about an hour. At this time, you will also complete the adoption contract required for adopting one of our dogs and pay the adoption fee. If, for any reason, the dog does not adapt well to your home, it must be returned to the rescue. Please note that the adoption fee and any expenses incurred during your time with the dog will not be refunded.

Smidget Rescue in Covington, WA

Smidget Rescue is dedicated to finding homes for dogs weighing under 25 pounds, affectionately referred to as "Super Midgets." Occasionally, we may have larger dogs available for adoption. As a small organization, Smidget Rescue is led by a single founder and supported by a team of volunteers. We operate as a foster-based rescue, which means we do not have a physical facility and are not open to the public. Our organization takes Sundays and Mondays off unless we have an adoption event scheduled. Our dogs are primarily rescued from high-kill shelters in California and Eastern Washington, as well as locally. We also accept owner surrenders and occasionally care for puppies born at the rescue to mothers rescued while pregnant. These dogs often come from difficult backgrounds and possess wonderful personalities, yet they would likely not have the opportunity for a loving home without our intervention. We take great pride in bringing these dogs to Smidget Rescue to help them find their forever families. If you are interested in adopting a new companion, please reach out to us at [email protected] to request an adoption application and begin the process. Join the Smidget Rescue family and discover how adopting a small dog can transform your life. Once you choose a small dog, you may never want to go back!
