Adoption Process
The adoption process begins with the submission of an adoption application, followed by a due diligence investigation. Applicants must demonstrate a good veterinary history for any current pets and provide a secure fenced area or another enclosed space for the dog. If the applicant lives in an apartment, there must be a designated pet area and landlord approval. It is essential that the dog is a good fit for the applicant's family and any existing pets. Once approved by MLD, the adopter will sign an Adoption Contract. This agreement stipulates that the adopter must allow the dog to live indoors, keep up to date with all veterinary visits, vaccinations, and heartworm prevention or treatments. The adopter agrees to contact MLD at any point during the dog's life if they can no longer keep the pet and must obtain prior written consent from MLD for any transfer of ownership. Adoption fees are set at $150 for adult dogs, $175 for puppies under six months, and $100 for senior dogs over seven years. A discount of 20% is available for military personnel and individuals over 65 years of age.
Service Areas
The service areas include Zachary, Ethel, Pride, Jackson, Clinton, St. Francisville, Baker, East Baton Rouge Parish, and East Feliciana Parish, all located in Louisiana.
